How do you equip your character with better weapons so you wont lose as many fights?

You can buy items with $$ and respect(earned from robberies and fights), or be rewarded with them by fighting people or completing goals.
or
You could always buy gold bars to spend.

Obviously my character is a work in progress, but I had a lot of success in the early levels with fighting and robbing exclusively and not doing any missions, as well as keeping my mob around 20. The respect points allowed me to equip my small mob pretty nicely and the money allowed me to build a decent hood pretty early on.

If I could start over, I would try to use the skill points toward energy a little more instead of exclusive to attack/def/stamina
