Can I crash your low level party? I'm not quite as low level and not really planning to camp, but just found the forum after finding myself seriously outclassed by rivals at my level, so I'm working to build my economy and stats a bit so I can continue with active play.
I'm now level 35, 65 Mafia, 1015 att, 1150 def.
I have $9705/hr profile income, but really more like $5900 collected:

Currently saving to upgrade the movie theaters and upgrading the laundromats while I wait. I've bought 10 nvb -trying to decide if I should buy more. Have been building a few machine guns just for something to do, but not sure whether to build more buildings or just wait until I have the money for lofts.

Your top priority should be getting your stats up a bit. Your attack and defence are a bit low. Make sure you level slowly for the next couple levels and actually spend some money on equipment. I know it sucks when you're saving up for awesome buildings, but it's worth it. Also, I would recommend buying a bunch more NVBs. They will be good for a really long time and will give you a substantial boost now without taking money away from your economy.
Your upgrade focus should be your MT and your Dominicans. Other than your laundromats, a good upgrade for you in the meantime would be those barbershops. They can produce decent income and aren't that expensive/time consuming to get up to level 4 or 5.

Thanks. I've been thinking about buying equipment, but the stuff available seems pretty lame for the price. I could buy combat shotguns for my bottom 6 Mafia for a gain of +18 att/ +6 def and a cost of $90,000. Or maybe I should buy junkers or motorcycles--for the same $90k I could buy 15 motorcycles +30/30 or 45 junkers for +45/45 since I don't have enough vehicles for all my guys. But is that a good use of money if they will be replaced pretty soon? I could also increase Mafia size, but already my bottom six guns are only +2 attack, as are my bottom three armor (though I think I can afford three more nvb).
Sadly I have an android, so no event items in my future.

Shoe store actually looks a little more appealing than the collection agency for the same footprint, though somewhat pricier to upgrade. Let me ask your thoughts on defense. I've been focusing mainly on attack numbers since I can pick my rivals and it seems like I'm always going to be attacked/ robbed by someone. I have been using the bank, so maybe the answer its that I could put money into better defense and stop banking, but that might wreck my peace of mind more than the cost. I don't see any inexpensive way to get my defense up to 1500. I could buy maybe 30 Mace for +90 def, but no attack gain.

There helmet 4 attack 8 defence locked for me but shouldn't be for you.

I am at lower level than you but my defence is 1180. You
Stab vests are bad value: for $9k you get 3/7, but if you buy armored gloves and riot helmets, you get 3/8 per pair for $8900.
The 4/8 swat helmet costs $18k. I don't think the +1 attack over the gloves/riot combo is worth the extra $9100.
Until you have SWAT helmet unlocked you have no choice.

I had to read your post like 30 times scratching my head and trying to figure out what you was saying... then I realized that you don't even know what you are saying.
Your combo doesn't work bud. You can't have a 2bit armor combo. Doesn't work that way. You can only use one or the other. And yes 1 extra point (given or taken) makes a difference. At lvl 100 - it could be a 500 point difference on your stat...
