It's a great unit, but I guess that you can't get it unless you use plenty of gold for it.

You can definately do 7-9 for free.
I always played the events for free and get 8-9. (opened 10 2x)
The open rate on 10 was absolutely absurd and was like 1-2% (so while possible the odds are not in your favor)

I have previously read, the less boxes (event specific) you have accumulated, the better your odds are at opening and getting the items. Can anyone confirm?
Is this event worth compared to boss events in term of xp gain? Do you PVP or PVE for the cases?
No, you have pretty good odds until you reach 8. After that, it gets hard.
