Italian Restaurant, Movie Theater, Loft are 3 main buildings everyone here will agree on. The other 2 are really more opinions based on personal experience. All buildings under level 5 and all mafia unlocks are type A buildings - they will help your economy grow the fastest.

I personally think that $1,032 every 5 minutes is a great thing to have at a low level - so I put in a vote for 2 x level 10 laundromats.
For my last best building, I'll throw in a house. Having a long payout building with upgrades that you will probably keep around for a long time is always a good thing to have around.
In summation - Italian Restaurant, Movie Theater, Loft, Laundromat, House.

Excluding NCs and LTBs, my top 5:
Loft, MT, Dominicans, Wholesale warehouses, Tshirts
I miss alot of the 3hr collection times, so prefer to go for the 12/18/24hr buildings.
It's possible but agree not common - one of my accounts isn't much higher than 55 and I have built: 2 pagodas & 2 toy stores. Considering buying the latest tech building but the 75 mil cost is definitely challenging!!
I have to get the building though - it's the prettiest building in the game.
Free player here except during syndicate wars.

Loft and MT are no-brainers regardless of playing style.
LTB, if you can afford it, will always be the best non-NC building available sub-55.
Domincans are the best standard-cycle (ie, good for all players) buildings, with cheap quick upgrades.
Beyond that playing style determines.
The important thing to remember is that you'll want to be focusing on Loft/MT/LTB upgrades, so the next building should basically be worthwhile enough to have, but not so expensive as it delays the "real" upgrades. Play style/collection times/iph will determine which building fits that bill.

Diagree on the wholesale warehouse. The only thing those are good for is robbing at the lower levels in my opinion. T-Shirt Stands are the much better option because they're so small and cheap. It's the size of the T-Shirt Stand that makes the Wholesale Warehouse useless to me and why I never got one.
I'm stunned how often I see people with L5 Casino/Office & Lvl 1 NCs, or L7-10 HMs and L1-3 MTs/Lofts.
Truly bizarre. And a hindrance to the efficacy of my robbing.
