Attack Gone Wrong

I launched an attack against a neighbor's outpost HQ, and said outpost had no buildings. My troops went over, I looked at the report, and lost EVERY single unit I sent. This doesn't make sense, as my 100 hammerheads are much more powerful than his 50 tanks. Anyone else having these problems?

oh yeah, if you try to capture a base. there seem to be a penalty to your troops. I was capturing some poor soul base and i lost 30 hammerhead after the battle to reduce morale.
