I regularly add and delete allies. I find it changes the rival list switching from 498 to 500 and back.

If you have 500 allies - each allie would allow you to bring 4 units - so if you only had light gunners ( a1 d0 ) you could bring 2000 of them to battle which would give you without any other bonuses etc 2000 attack and 0 defence, this also depends on your level.

Look at it this way...1 ally let's you bring your 4 strongest attack units when attacking and 4 strongest defense units when defending. Increase to 2 allies and your next 4 strongest jump in so you have your best 8 attackers when attacking and 8 best defenders when defending, and so on. Add the attack # of your 8 strongest attackers and that's your attack number. Same with defenders. This is outside of any boosts you have.
Say you buy a stronger attack unit than what you already have - that unit will now replace the weakest unit.
So to your original question, it helps both attack and defense. Just know that in the example above, the 8 units used for attacking may or may not be the same as those used for defending. Attacking and defending scenarios are mutually exclusive.

From memory the first time I did a mission I'd accidentally touched the screen at the army base or whatever it was.
