One theory I've heard that might hold some water is:

The odds of getting an item when you open a briefcase get worse the more items you have (i.e. getting the first item ~50%, getting the 10th item, ~2% after successful open). Now if you use the timer reset and don't exit the Event screen, the odds won't reset until you are attempt to get the 10th item. So, you maintain the ~50% chance of getting items 1 thru 9 instead of diminishing odds if you exit the event screen and allow your device to re-sync with Gree's server's.

Empirically, I have only tested this once. I accumulated about 30 crates before I began opening them. Then I opened them all never exiting the event screen using the timer reset and gold open option. It only took me 300 gold to get from 1 thru 9, and I spent the rest of a vault of gold without getting the 10th item.

So take this anyway you want.

Myself a few select friends tested a version of that around the new year, the TLDR summary of the results was that it didn't work. Odds get recalc'd every time, unfortunately.

I'm on 9 and just to get there has been 1 1/2 vaults. And so far for 10 that i haven't got its another 1/2 vault. F'n lame bikes and hammers that don't do squat for me as well.

Well I got the first 5 for free using cash out of my first 8 crates. Then I saw what looks like the shortest 20% sale ever and purchased a swift 650 gold. Burned through that to get to 9 now I'm going to use the remaining 100 or so on opens only. Wish me luck!

Blnt on first open with cash, moved to gold and opened 8 on the trot with success, no resets. 6 good opens later and I had my 9th thenburnt through 800 gold on resets/opens for the tenth.

Using Gold, I had 8 Bonds after 9 case opens. #9 was on open 58. Don't have #10 yet after 144 opens. Anyone want a Carnival Sledgehammer? I got a bunch of 'em.

I think it was for android only. I saw my friend's game (android) and the 20% sale, but when I flipped over to my iOS, the sale wasn't there.

I started this thread - it cost me 2700 gold bars!!!

I am very disgruntled that it cost me this much. There was a bug fix on my iPad this morning and on my first attempt after the update I got my 10th.
