I do too, I just don't have the money to spend on gems. Good thing they give some free ones though, so I can get some good stuff.

Best advice regarding minimum gem usage is to wait until the tail end of the event so that way you can use as much free energy as possible and the bare minimum of gems. You do have to make sure you give yourself enough time at the end, though. I imagine it would be very aggravating to have enough gems to finish an LTQ but not finishing it because you waited too long.
