I had to find a site that resized my picture to 150x150 pix cuz I kept getting that message too
Google resize picture or avatar 150x150 they list a few, I used
One that was like resize.uk something something

Probably either format or size. Try to use jpg with a res of 72dpi. And the size i think should not be greater than 130x130 pxls.
I cannot seem to edit my signature at all maybe i am going about it wrong?
I am trying from the general tab
