2800/2400 stats and rivals use 4 fewer allies.

Yup I think so. It is pretty cool and does shake up things right at the top as you mentioned.
Will go for the 20 gems of light unit then stop there. Top 250 will be out of my range for sure.

Just try for the lower 4 units, with diligence if you start from the beginning, you can get to the 3rd unit (using medium option). With LUCK, maybe the 4th unit.
Above that, I think its pretty impossible for purely free players (I would love the 10% faster upgrade). Just bear in mind ... its not real gold so who cares if you use the middle option and that IS real money when you use your credit card (save the cash to buy a nice dinner for your significant other ... you're reap far better rewards)
