Why don't my stats increase from loot items?

The best items get used.. and the loot that you get obviously isn't strong enough to increase your stats.

(they are replacing my Exelero's)

Do the story, master the levels. You get some RP for doing level 2 (only way I know to turn energy into RP), a map specific loot item for level 3, a henchman for level 4, and 1 skill point for level 5. I think there are 50 or 60 some odd maps, so if you master them all you will have an additional 50-60 skill points... In three years if you don't buy energy "refills".
