If it is the same as MW then the tougher the monster (more energy to kill) the better the rune box drop rate should be on a per kill basis. The key is to find the optimal monster for your level and stats to kill that drops rune boxes at a good rate. In my experience I always hit the higher end monsters for a few reasons. The gold payout is good so you can at least bank that. Rune/box/crate etc drops are more likely and it tends to minimize level gain and gives you a chance at some worthwhile loot. Generally using this strategy I usually have more than enough boxes to open, decent amount of gold to pay for opening with middle option and minimize levelling at this time. I personally limit how many boxes I have on hand near the end of the event since the boxes disappear usually after the event ends. Just my two cents...
