How many blocks does your hood expand when growing?

I have looked all over for this and I can't find the info. When I grow my hood, how many sidewalk tiles do I gain?

Left = west
Down = south

This^^ Cuz the hood doesn't expand left or down. It's down left or down right. Therefore it must be what Spartacus said.

When you click on 'expansion' in the store you can choose the arrow on the left or the arrow on the right so I always thought it was just easier to say right an left, no room for confusion that way.

It's just more like the one opposite of right, left is more southeast of the southwest one so why head north. ya know
