You can only bring 1 of each item (gun, armor, melee, vehicles, explosive) per mafia member into the fight. And the number of mafia you bring is capped at your level X 5 or 500.
So, when you buy a new gun it replaces the weakest gun that you are currently bringing into the fight. And attack and defense are calculated separately...
So, you have to figure out how many mafia you bring, and what the weakest attack and weakest defense item you equip them with and then decide which new items to buy to upgrade your stats.
murf" im not talking about when im fighting im talking in general when u buy a weapon dont u get like eg machine pistol would be like 2attack 2defence when u buy it isnt it supossed to count to your overall statts

It depends on your number of mafia members & your other weapons. If your weakest mafia member is using a weapon that has better stats than 2/2 then the machine guns won't be used so won't contribute to your total attack & defence

I also asked this at Starbucks, but all they said was Venti or Grande, this answer was disappointing. I think they knew, it's in the cup size.
