Do you only need one for yourself? If so why can you buy more than 1? If you need many who are they for? thanks

Yes you only need one for yourself and it appears the stronger the weapon the more damage you do in PvE. You can get more and your army will equip it for PvP just like any other weapon.

Your personal hero can only use hero equipment (or equipment specifically made for your class). All items, including hero equipment, can be used by your army.

you'll pick up a lot of equipment as you start to do the missions though, so I wouldn't worry about spending too much $ on it right away
