I attack someone when my offense is far above their defense
and I rarely win.... can anyone explain this to me please??

Good question... and what were the old rules, will we ever know?

Fight mechanics did change, how and what changed, is a mystery, but fight outcomes are very different then what they used to be.

total item used:128


His total mafia defense 988
(as pitiful as my understanding of this game goes
defense provided by buildings does not count when you
fight only when you rob...this is my educated guess)
when I attack him his defense is 808
his mafia members:29
His item number:116

I guess you're level maybe above 60, right ?

it's not safe when you attack people with the gap is too close (not guarantee 100% win), his defense skill points may add up to his total defense sometimes.

def buildings doesn't count during att?
So the purpose of def buildings is just to block robberies? Then its definitely a waste..
Def buildings do count. If u r able to push up ur buildings def to 500 or more, u will gonna see a big diff at ur level. Nobody can att u that much

why does the defense then drop between fighting and robbery??

It's a different formula for def in fights and robberies. There's a old thread on it.

I'm sure u have come across hoods with only def buildings. What's the purpose of having that? There's nothing to rob from the hood. The players are either noobs too.

Sorry you are wrong.. the people that have only defense buildings in their hood is to make their defense nr look higher then it really is to scare of attackers
