I had heard about the app crashing or freezing up with the V2 that came out.

You heard correct, but only happening to a small number of users. Personally, once I installed V2, no issues at all for dozens of hours, then had a few freezes and crashs, had textures become transparent, etc, etc. All are solved by rebooting the phone (atleast for me). The update is worth it for what it brings to the game.
