What most people forget, is that the field changes alot through the game... when I was a n00b, I thought... "whats up with LE buildings, I can never afford them anyway". Now I am close to completing...

Actually I think staying ahead in this game requires skills, but it does boil down to how strategically you spend your gold and how much of it you got.
