I understand that the big 4 cover all of the the elements, but is there anyway other reason that these 4 became so necessary to gameplay.

I've found exiting from game or uninstall/reinstall solves this issue. Don't be concerned about losing data

So I guess it's better of getting the big 4 maxed even though the legendaries have better stats. Just because they're easier to max and will get you out of trouble for any stage
