They're for building fortifications in syndicates. See mxz's Seperate thread

I think if I get to 9 with cash opens fairly early I might use gold to try to get the 10th. Mostly because if nothing else I would get the 100 gold spent prize if nothing else.

Well that's just a load of bull, considering previous open 10 items always have ones that are <400 but this one is in the thousands. But I can guess that the final item needed for the grand prize has a 2% chance of appearing for the level 100 and above players?

I am seeing a lot of bricks also during PvP, but still nothing in inventory for them.

The modern paintings seems to be going fairly well for me:

1. Painting
2. Nothing

4. Painting and Museum Heist Mask 55/84

Bricks are for syndicates. You'll see how many you have once you're in a syndicate.

If you hit the syndicate button in the menu you can see your amount as well.

I'm at 8/10. After getting burned massively on the last event (~100 opens when I was on 9/10 with no result, and for an item I really, really wanted) I think I've got the lucky streak I needed.

5 so far all cash opens, most recent was a blnt, not bad for me so far. Usually grinds to a crushing halt on day two, we'll have to see how it pans out
