I wouldn't worry about it. Defence is a pretty meaningless stat now - really only a mafia defence bonus would be worth chasing IMHO.

But you're right in general. The game is becoming one of the "top 3" and everybody else. The IP bonuses they get make it harder each time for any other team to break into the top three positions. Only big time drama can change that now.
