Answer a question, and then ask one.

I shall begin.

Is reality really real?

Rookeye

Define "really"...

If you could have anything for breakfast, what would it be?

CryoCrystal

Have you ever gamed during a natural disaster?

Sol Invictus
06-20-2014, 06:23 PM
It's storming pretty heavy right now, all of a sudden. Thunderclaps are CRAZY loud and setting off car alarms.
Other than that, no.

And hey! Rookeye didn't answer my question!

Sol Invictus
06-22-2014, 12:11 PM
The human obsession to control the lives of others through the coercive force of government.

If reality is really real, then how do you explain away the compelling argument that reality is actually just a computer simulation?

The human obsession to control the lives of others through the coercive force of government.

If reality is really real, then how do you explain away the compelling argument that reality is actually just a computer simulation?

1) what's a "computer"?

2) how does it make/control/run a simulation? (Dependent or independent of man?)

3) how do you know it functions in that way?

4) taking into consideration your first three answers, why do you think everything fits so neatly into the "compelling" box argument of a simulation?

5) what other arguments have you entertained besides this one, and what were the merits if each one?

6) how many times have you watched The Matrix? ;)

Rookeye

Rookeye is a bast*rdization of Rookie which is short for Rook...one of the characters in a book I'm writing. No lie. ;)

What subject did you hate in High School, but realize you needed in college?

CryoCrystal
06-24-2014, 10:27 AM
My screen name story is well this: Ingame I named my self CryoGen. Later on is shortened it to Cryo, then, I changed it to CrYo. And made a line at the name of CryoCrystal then my Ingame name changed to King CrYo with my new Sky Majesty.

Can you build something with your own two hands?

Sol Invictus
06-25-2014, 02:31 PM
I built little, wooden steps for my bulldog to get into bed. Sometimes he gets sore when he plays with my girlfriend's parent's English Mastiff and he whines at us to pick him up and put him on the bed.

Other than that...Legos.

If space is expanding what is it expanding into?

Sol Invictus
06-27-2014, 11:08 AM
A tough one, no one wanted to tackle. Good job.

The answer is that the universe isn't expanding into anything, it's just expanding. It's easier to understand if you imagine the universe as the surface of a balloon. When you blow up the balloon, the surface of the balloon expands, but it doesn't expand into anything. If you were to use a marker to make two dots on the balloon, and then blow up the balloon, then the dots would separate further and further as you inflated the balloon. The surface of the balloon expands, but (in the case of the universe) it does not expand into anything.

Thanks, Neil.
http://www.startalkradio.net/

On that note...

Think of how large the universe is. It's so large, we can't even imagine it, but within it are billions of galaxies that themselves contain millions of planets. By the numbers, there must be at least a few other planets our there, if not hundreds or thousands or more, capable of sustaining life.

The universe is an estimated ~14 billion years old, while planet Earth is a little under 5 billion years and humans have only been around for about 200k of those years. And in that time, we've figured out how to explore space.

So, considering the probability of other planets in the universe capable of sustaining life...
And considering the age of the universe, and the relative young age of planet Earth, which has developed intelligent life capable of space-faring...

Is there alien life out there?

If you say 'No' then how to you explain away the math that suggests the universe should be teeming with life?
If you say 'Yes' then...where is everybody?

CryoCrystal
06-27-2014, 11:15 AM
Yes and no. No one knows. I believe yes because there is proof of a planet almost exactly like earth that I fact COULD sustain life.

When you were a child, what was the scariest movie your parents permitted you to watch and then regretted it that night? ;)

Jun-fan
06-30-2014, 10:42 AM
I wasn't not allowed to watch Michael Jackson's Thriller video when that came out, but I was watching it at night before my mom came home from work. I was supposed to be in bed, but like the hoodlum I was, I stayed up watching TV. It was somewhat scary, but nothing that kept me up at night. What did keep me up was the deep cut I received when I jumped up and broke a glass tabletop trying to turn of the TV and get to bed when I heard my mom open the door. I'm still scarred from that. Physically, anyway.

If i parse it, unless you're speaking philosophically, or poetically, the same worm eaten by a bird is not the same worm that later devours the bird, though it is true that most dead things are eaten by worms, and the cyclical truth of bird eat worm, worm eat bird is kinda neat.

Were you then seeking to make a truth claim that meanness comes back upon the person who is mean? I'd agree with the sentiment, but not pair the two examples.

Beta testing would be neat. I'm all for giving my opinion on things, and at least with beta testing you're seeing new things every now and then. If you're on the development side, you're staring at the same code for months on end until you move on to a new project.

Jun-fan

I think that'd be neat to have them learn Latin. Soon we're not going to have enough people versed in Latin to teach it, so we need to make sure that the language is passed on. Kinda like Kung Fu Panda - each generation teaches the next.

Imagine you and I are on a deserted island. You start to sing some song that gets stuck in your head or something. I do not like to sing and I don't want you to sing either, so I say to you that if you do not stop singing then I am going to put you in a cage.

Is this legitimate and/or moral?

I'm going to assume your answer would be that it is not legitimate, and move on to the real question. If your answer is "Yes" then you can elaborate.

Imagine you, myself and fifty others are on this island. You start to sing, and the rest of us tell you that if you do not stop singing then we will put you in a cage.

Is this legitimate and/or moral?

Rookeye
07-18-2014, 12:07 PM
It is neither legitimate nor moral...it is FORCE. It is civilization, Lord of the Flies style. It is forcing one view upon another. However, my singing and refusing to shut up is also forcing my view (desire for that song) onto another. If I refuse to stop, my refusal is also illigetimate and immoral.

What "makes" morality right? ;)

Jun-fan
07-18-2014, 02:54 PM
Morality comes from a society's views as a whole of right or wrong, which in itself isn't necessarily always right or wrong (for example, slavery in the US was morally okay for a time being, but not in today's US). So what "makes" morality right has to do with the people's attitudes at the time those views are held.

Wow, this could evolve into a huge dissertation. Let's change gears...

What kind of non-traditional topping would you want to see on a pizza? Pineapples and buffalo chicken were weird when they first came out on pizzas, but people got used to them. Going back and expanding upon my previous question and the answer given...

If force is illegitmate and immoral, then what makes democracy such a good idea? It has been famously said that democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding on what to have for dinner, vividly illustrating the tyranny of the majority.

If it is wrong for one person to tell another person what to do (or what not to do), and it is wrong for 50 people to tell one person what or what not to do...then at what point do the numbers become sufficiently large to justify controlling the actions of someone else?

Democracy sucks.

Rookeye
07-24-2014, 09:01 AM
Happiness. "Contentment in all circumstances is great gain." If I am a bazillionaire, but am unhappy, of what use is that? Money cannot buy me an honest friend, a sincere compliment, a faithful spouse. It cannot buy me laughter, or show me how to live.

Yet I can be happy, both in riches and in poverty. I can make my surroundings rich with real things that money can't buy: faith, hope, truth, love. I know that my friends are true; they don't cling to me for my wealth, and will not desert me when the money is gone. There is a great insecurity that comes with riches that is absent with Happiness. :)

What is the meaning of life?

*Bonus points if you answer with 42

What ever it is you have in life that makes you happy.

-----------------------------------------

…"O Deep Thought computer," he said, "the task we have designed you to perform is this. We want you to tell us... " he paused, "the Answer!"
"The Answer?" said Deep Thought. "The Answer to what?"
"Life!" urged Fook.
"The Universe!" said Lunkwill.
"Everything!" they said in chorus.
Deep Thought paused for a moment's reflection.
"Tricky," he said finally.
"But can you do it?"
Again, a significant pause.
"Yes," said Deep Thought, "I can do it."
"There is an answer?" said Fook with breathless excitement.
"A simple answer?" added Lunkwill.
"Yes," said Deep Thought. "Life, the Universe, and Everything. There is an answer. But," he added, "I'll have to think about it."

…He paused and satisfied himself that he now had everyone's attention, before continuing more quietly. "But the program will take me a little while to run." Fook glanced impatiently at his watch. "How long?" he said. "Seven and half million years," said Deep Thought. Lunkwill and Fook blinked at each other. "Seven and a half million years!" they cried in chorus. "Yes," declaimed Deep Thought, "I said I'd have to think about it, didn't I?

... 7.500.000 years later ...

…"Seven and a half million years our race has waited for this Great and Hopefully Enlightening Day!" cried the cheerleader. "The Day of the Answer!"
Hurrahs burst from the ecstatic crowd.
"Never again," cried the man, "never again will we wake up in the morning and think Who am I? What is my purpose in life? Does it really, cosmically speaking, matter if I don't get up and go to work? For today we will finally learn once and for all the plain and simple answer to all these nagging little problems of Life, the Universe and Everything!"

…There was a moment's expectant pause while panels slowly came to life on the front of the console. Lights flashed on and off experimentally and settled down into a businesslike pattern. A soft low hum came from the communication channel.
"Good morning," said Deep Thought at last.
"Er . . . good morning, O Deep Thought," said Loonquawl nervously, "do you have . . . er, that is... "
"An answer for you?" interrupted Deep Thought majestically. "Yes. I have."
The two men shivered with expectancy. Their waiting had not been in vain.
"There really is one?" breathed Phouchg.
"There really is one," confirmed Deep Thought.
"To Everything? To the great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything?"
"Yes."
Both of the men had been trained for this moment, their lives had been a preparation for it, they had been selected at birth as those who would witness the answer, but even so they found themselves gasping and squirming like excited children.
"And you're ready to give it to us?" urged Loonquawl.
"I am."
"Now?"
"Now," said Deep Thought.
They both licked their dry lips.
"Though I don't think," added Deep Thought, "that you're going to like it."
"Doesn't matter!" said Phouchg. "We must know it! Now!"
"Now?" inquired Deep Thought.
"Yes! Now..."
"All right," said the computer, and settled into silence again. The two men fidgeted. The tension was unbearable.
"You're really not going to like it," observed Deep Thought.
"Tell us!"
"All right," said Deep Thought. "The Answer to the Great Question..."
"Yes . . . !"
"Of Life, the Universe and Everything... " said Deep Thought.
"Yes . . . !"
"Is. . . " said Deep Thought, and paused.
"Yes . . . !"
"Is..."
"Yes...!!!..."
"Forty-two," said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.

It was a long time before anyone spoke.
Out of the corner of his eye Phouchg could see the sea of tense expectant faces down in the square outside.
"We're going to get lynched, aren't we?" he whispered.
"It was a tough assignment," said Deep Thought mildly.
"Forty-two!" yelled Loonquawl. "Is that all you've got to show for seven and a half million years' work"
"I checked it very thoroughly," said the computer, "and that quite definitely is the answer.

What purpose does laughing serve?

DK Zenith

Can faith in "Science" be considered a religious belief? ;) ;)

First we must define faith and religion:

re·li·gion
riˈlijən
noun
the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.

faith
fāTH
noun
1.
complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

Then, let's look at spirituality:

"Modern spirituality is centered on the "deepest values and meanings by which people live." It embraces the idea of an ultimate or an alleged immaterial reality. It envisions an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his/her being."

These are the first definitions that come up when Googled.

By definition, science does not cater to any supreme being or God, therefore complete trust in science couldn't be considered a religion.

However, it can be considered spirituality, because you can completely trust the deepest values and meanings you live by. Deep belief in science is almost inherently spirituality.

I'd like to see a 5th Element TV Show...not sure how they'd do it, not sure what they'd cross it with. But I want it. Oh, and Zorg must somehow not be dead, cuz his gun commercials are the best!

What do humans tend to anthropomorphize certain animals and not others?

Because it allows us to share a closeness with an animal that we like as opposed to distancing ourselves once we don't.

Basically anything combining horses, weapons and armor...I'm particularly fond of the Mongolian general Subedai and his plan for invading Europe, and pretty much all of Roman warfare. I'll make an exception for Patton, since he considered his mechanized units merely upgraded cavalry. ;)

Kinda neutral. Actually, I haven't watched anime in many years, but when I did I thought it was great no matter what the characters were. The way the drawings were and the way the stories unfolded was so different than what I was used to.

Is a college degree overrated in today's society/economy?

Rookeye
08-13-2014, 04:24 PM
I think (a) most degrees teach more (or less) than they purport to, and in that manner are overrated, however (b) employers will continue to rely on them to separate wheat from chaff in the marketplace, so the cycle of spending on unnecessary degree(s) will continue.

Do you think there is a difference between so-called "hard sciences" and those that are perhaps less than granite? ;)

What are the lyrics to your favorite song?

Spencer Day - Movie of Your Life

Come on turn the lights down low
And sit with me in second row
Tonight they’ll show the movie of your life

The heartache and the tragedy
A light romantic comedy
You oughta see the movie of your life

Did you have a happy ever after?
Underneath the technocolor sky
Did it make you sing with joy and laughter?
Did it ever make you want to cry?
And when the final frame was fading
Did it leave you satisfied?
Or was there too much that it lacked
And did you want your money back
How did you like the movie of your life?

Come on let the camera’s roll
You wrote the lines now run the show
It’s yours to own the movie of your life

Strange and cloudy mysteries
Unravel cinematically
The beauty of the movie of your life

Then the plot begins to twist
Around the poor protagonist
And everyone’s a villain in disguise

When you hurt and if you bleed
Remember that it’s make believe
Cause in the movies no one ever dies
It’s just a

Flicker then it’s over
And they never tell you why
But boy I’m really glad I came
I hoping that you feel the same
I really love the movie of your life

Did you have a happy ever after?
Underneath the technocolor sky
Did it make you sing with joy and laughter?
Did it ever make you want to cry?
And when the final frame was fading
Did it leave you satisfied?
Did you cheer and beg for more
Or angrily walk out the door
And think of all you meant to say
Another chance a second take
You did your best, you gave your all
You made the final casting call
To save a little scene for me
And tell me that I’ll always be
A moment in the movie of your life
A moment in the movie of your life

A database is a long list of information that you can arrange in different ways. You can show just part of it, or make it look pretty, but you're pulling from the original list. Some "lists of data" are done on spreadsheets, which puts all the information in little boxes across the page. ;)

No. I dont like movies in 3D.
