has anyone else noticed a surge in the data usage for modern war in the last 2 months or so?

I mean A LOT!

it seems a simple / quick check is upwards of 50m

for those folks with um-limited data plans, some are getting killed!

gree, do you do analysis of the usage? can you provide any stats of what an active player, say 10x logins daily, some scouting, hitting, checking buildings, and such may look like for usage on a player with a fair sized army. 10k units, all standard buildings and almost all of the limiteds.

Yes had to upgrade my plan this month, didn't know what was causing it. No change of usage on my side

I have also had to upgrade my data plan from 2gig a month to 3gig a month and seem to be hitting that limit as well. I haven't really changed what I use my phone for so I would like to know if the developers have changed the data requirements for this game.

though I have changed from Palringo to Groupme for coms, can anyone else tell me know if Groupme is more data hungry?

I have noticed it aswell. If you don't already have unlimited data and don't want to pay for it, a good option is to switch to T-Mobile if you have it in your area. When I go over my 2gigs I don't get charged they just slow down the connection. The slowed connection is still able to play MW though

I have noticed this as well but did not know what was causing it, good observation. After checking MW is using 2 to 3 times more data than previous months. And the last few months I have been playing less at work because I need to focus on work more. It could be FA and also the push notifications.

2 gigs ? Wow - you guys got off cheap - I have a 30 gig plan and had to bump up to 50 gig - but then again - I have a 20 y/o daughter who texts / Facebook / Pinterest / Instagram like every 13 seconds :/

I too got hit. GREE closed my ticket saying all is fine. A very wise and intelligent person taught me how to check the data usage on my iPad. 1. Shut off cellular. 2. Close all apps. 3. Reset usage calculator. 4. Turn on cellular and use a single app for a set period of time. 5. Review.

Did this for MW. I collected cash, raided single map target, posted note in chat, then left ipad in sleep mode. Had a stop watch going and at 10 minutes, reviewed. 100mb!!!! Only MW running. I replied to my ticket with this. No response.

Ever since I upgraded to iphone 5S (from 4s), my data usage has doubled... and it is all due to "DNS Services"

I reset my stats 48 hours ago, since then it says I have used a total of 918 MB and 829 MB of it was DNS Services, MW as 56 mb... I have barely been on my phone at all (without wifi) in that period.. makes no sense to me..

Before I reset it the other day my total data said 12.7 gigs and 8.2 of it was dns services.. crazy!!!

Seems all the checks and balances and glitch fixes are actually at the cost of everyone of us. Was this truly the only way to resolve those issues? Making data outrageous and sneaking charges on members/players as a side effect?

I too have been getting nailed with usage overages in the past two months. This is the first time going over data usage since playing MW 4 years ago, something was definitely changed.

I would like to hear from Gree on this please?

some time ago, someone posed the theory: aside from gold, how is gree making money? and answered with, by getting a kickback on usage fees from the wireless carriers.

hmmmm looks like that may have been spot on.

Its definitely because of their attempt to stop the glitches, that the app now connects to the servers all the time.
I'm lucky my game is on my iPad with wifi only or this would have been very expensive game now - besides the gold purchases..

i've also doubled my usage in the past 2 months. Had no clue why it went up since my cell phone use was the same. Great observation.
Does anyone know if I just force close MW through the multitasking screen, will it help with the data usage while i'm not actively using the app?

If you just check for collecting buildings there should be no problem. Going to other's bases will ride up in the 100's of MB's. Make sure it's MW and not other apps. I try to avoid groupme when I can because it sucks up data, especially with pictures and now gifs and what not. Also turn off auto updating.

Kguitar & Blade of 3: when Verizon pinged me to say my usage was near maxed, that was on the 12th and my usage was 1.76 gb in 2.5hrs.....with the ipad closed, in my bag, not on since i left the house on wifi. So it did that to me in sleep mode.

I went on a raiding spree to test this out. I reset all counters and turned my wifi off to use my data plan. This game was literally using 1Mb/min. This is the same as Pandora would use streaming music. This is insane...

only 1mb a min? iOS? Besides the 10 minute test I mentioned previously, I first did a cash collect, raid one map target for single hit and posted comment, turned off cellular and checked and had used either 30 or 50mb in 1.5 minutes. Did the same thing with my 5S and had 10mb in one minute.

Would really like a mod or developer to chime in here...as well as respond to my ticket.

Correction, 1MB. Still too much. Spend an hour a day using cellular for this game, that approaches 2GB a month... Just for one app.

This looks like its turning out to be another nail in MW's coffin. First it gears up to only be played by whales and now is blowing out peoples data plans to just play for free. I hate to say it, but if things continue, we may as well burry the game now. It has even dropped to 56th place on the money earnings list when earlier this year it was around 9th.

I think if Gree's managing director can't see his idea of only catering to whales is killing this game. There is no more hope at all. Even for their other products.

I have wifi at home, but works, well it just doesn't. Also, I play the most when I'm at work, less kids demanding my attention :) Just have to hide in the toilet a lot. Apparently I have a bowl disorder :)

Please reply to this thread so we know what's going on and can stop assuming. It's costing a lot of us extra money each month in surprised data overages which is frustrating. For future reference it would of been reasonable to let us know of these changes ahead of time. It would of only required 5mins of your time to post a message.
It would also be very helpful to know what we should try to avoid doing thats more data intensive while having to play on our cellulars 3g & 4g network.

12.9mb, Wow! Glad I'm not the only one, i maxed my data use in 13 days. I originally blamed my carrier and thought they changed the data plan.

Thank you Jerie. I and my over data fees appreciate this. Please let us know as soon as you can as we are having to deactivate and activate cellular to use our devices...which isn't very user friendly.

This is getting insane. I used a gig of data in the last 7 days just on mw. Honestly this is a much bigger issue than hackers. Hope it gets addressed immediately.

My data plan just reset on the 25th and I've already used 2.7gigs!! Wtf. If this doesn't get fixed ASAP I'm done with this game, as I won't be able to afford it. I don't have wifi as I travel a lot so cellular was the only way to play. I've played for well over two years and have never had an issue.

Noticed roughly the same usage as last user that posted (own). Have played 2+ years without a problem. However with ridiculous energy requirements, more event than ever, no breaks in the action it seems as though the data usage could be the last straw for me. Gree's lack of self-awareness is astounding

I ran a check today (through data log) and the MW app uses 1mb every 2-3 secs.

I just looked at my data consumption and i only consumed 30mb atm, my phone only have 100mb allowed daily and MW is not eating up much data,. Maybe a US problem?

My MW data usage for this month is currently at 542MB - this doesn't include data across the Wi-Fi network. It's far and above my next app. I'm mostly a turtle in this game - I just log in to collect 12/24/48 buildings and participate in faction events.

No seriously... we really need an update here mods....this isnt the usual whiny issue like, 'Ghost keeps raiding my base with stuff he obviously hacked and GREE stinks and loves SUP'.

This is more like the...the freaking app has gone wild....can't afford to keep Modern War on my device anymore.....stop playing altogether type of issue. It's killing my data usage even if I'm not playing it and the iPad is in sleep mode. I can choose to or not to buy gold with you, but this is costing me money without my consent.

What is going on???

Good luck with Raiding then or loading new NPC's! I have 1500 MB a month in the first week its Used! 64KB connection won't do! MW works with it, But KA NEVER DID.
A reset will cost me 5 Euro, and I need 2 resets now a days with T-Mobile. I do use a hotspot from my phone to play with 2 other MW accounts! so obvious I Use more data.

I am looking for a Provider that will give me less Minutes to call, but more data a month! to start with 4GB a month

instead of 220 Minutes and only 1,5GB data! Who knows a good Sim-only provider with this?

Prefer Europian Sim-card!

I warned my faction mates about this a week ago. I now have a bill for 18G of data. I spend a little bit of money on this game from time to time , that is when I choose to. I certainly don't need a bill like that one again for a stupid phone game. I don't ever remember getting data usage surcharge like that even when I download movies or music etc.

Seriously mods can we get a definitive answer on this please. ...and don't fob us off as we are able to see which apps are using bandwidth and I can assure you its is modern war. .......

Mine are never on yet I'm using huge amounts of data. Good idea but don't think is issue

Mine's off too, never figured what they did. I use a data tracker app and it says I've used 13 GB of wifi data through my phone (don't watch movies or play many other games) so I'm guessing its mostly MW.

If you go into Cellular settings in iOS, each app is listed individually as far as how much data has been used.

Modern War for me continues to use as much as if I was streaming Pandora. Which IMHO is way too much. Though it hasn't been as much as some others.

How big are the data sets? When you load and remove load casts of characters, how big does that get?

The guys are reporting going over for about two months. What kind of extra chatter was put in to keep the client/server in synch? That wasn't there before?

And as Rex said, can you have you're guys try this? And run a monitor package? When loading data sets? Nod sets? During WD? FA? Raid boss events? Etc.

That would seem to make sense.


You couldn't perhaps turn on an ipad and try it for yourself?

I cleared my data statistics (Modern War was listed at over 7GB!) and then tracked data usage for a bit.

I raided people for about 10 minutes, closed the app, checked the data usage, and Modern War already used 8MB of data. That seems like a lot for such a short period of time, obviously at that rate it will use a ton of data over time if you use the app throughout the day.

I'm not sure why the devs can't do something similar to identify the activities that seem to result in the most data usage and then take a closer look at why.

There was a similar issue with one of their other games, Beyond the Dead, a while back, and they seemed to resolve it, perhaps this issue is similar.

Dude I run a mail server that sends over 1/2 mill emails per day it doesn't use 8.2Gb for DNS. You've got something seriously wrong there. manually add your DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 208.67.222.222. That's googles DNS and OPENDNS

I just retired all of my MW characters because you can't get your act together concerning this data black hole. No point in trying to come back due to out of control stat inflation. You just efficiently killed another gree title for me. Pretty sure I won't be the only one.

So once again, when gree says "we'll check this out" or "we're working on it", it really means- this is going in the too hard bin and if we ignore them, they might go away.

They replied 15 minutes ago and said they will investigate the problem.

I have sold everything on all 3 of my characters, donated to my fac, and deleted the game, as 20 of our other members have done because of this issue. This was the straw that broke the camel's back. We also did the same in KA and CC. Adios Greedy. Enjoy the bottom of the revenue stream where you belong.

CJ, Tardavic...anyone? I've never been one to rag on the game, the developers or the mods.....but this really is inexcusable. This freaking game is hijacking our devices, running up our bills, all due to your code. And you don't even have the decency to come back and say, 'hey...we're working on it. We hope to have it fixed by X'. Hell, you don't even have the decency to just tell us to frak off.....oh wait. You are. Just not to our faces.

Traveling today and on my layover I logged into mw for about 1 minute to collect buildings 29mb data used. Logged into ka for same amount of time to collect building as well. 18m of data used. 2 minutes almost 50 mega of data. Will be sending a ticket later when I am on wifi again.

Spent about 5 minutes in CC and it used 85m of data. Maybe not limited to MW?

Please can you also investigate Kingdom Age as that app is also hitting the data usage badly. If you find the issue with Modern War can you double check the same feature in Kingdom Age?

Hey guys, we're still looking into this one actively right now. There isn't a clear culprit, so it is taking some time.
KA player, but saw the issue. Maybe, y'know, some of those anti-cheating measures you put in places that forces the device to check in with your servers every five seconds? That just might be the issue, or part of it?

I had to turn off my cellular data. What's strange is that my wife has the same phone, bought at the same time and her data usage hasn't increased at all and she is on the game more than myself.

1.That the money being spent on data plans may no longer be available for gold.
2. That folks that have gone wifi only are further away from completing events and less likely to spend gold.

So this programming err is likely directly impacting profitability.

Hi Tadaaah....welcome. Thank you for letting us know a fix for this issue will be 4.2. But to be clear, your comment was the first to mention a fix in that release. There have been other threads where the 4.2 release would fix upgrade costs, but that's the first one about the data use issue. The last Mod comment came from CJ on 6/2 @ 3:04pm which just said that y'all didn't know what the culprit was.

Regarding being patient....you do realize that this issue is hijacking our devices, right? Luckily this incident occurred at the end of my billing cycle in May so I've been able to limit the impact of it by turning cellular on and off so I was only hit with three overage fees by my carrier for going over the data plan by 3x. However, I got pulled into a meeting for 30 minutes and wasn't able to shut cellular off and used up over 500mb of data. Poof.

Patience is in very short supply. If I spend money on gold and use it trying to get that impossible last unit on individual goal for raid boss.....that's my issue and choice. I decide to collect cash from my base and the data usage is so much that it costs me overage fees....well...that is a bit unreasonable. Not being able to pick up my mobile device to check mail or post a picture on Facebook of a kitten with some poorly worded phrasing, but I first have to make sure the MW app is closed and then turn data on, wait for it to sync, use said app (because I think everyone needs to see how clever I can be with kitten pictures) and then kill cellular again bc I don't trust your app isn't still drawing data....unreasonable.

So forgive us our frustrations and our snarky comments. This has gone on long enough with very little feedback. Now, if you need me, I'll be at the pawn shop selling the previously mentioned kitten so as to pay for the data fees.

I've set new highs in data usage on my 4 accounts 10-12 days into the month, costing me $90 in over usage charges so far, and more to come. On my main acct, MW alone used 13.3GB in 14 days - wow! I'm at 4-5GB of M w only usage 1/2 way into my data plan's month.

OK, so iOS 4.2 is going to fix this, fine. Taddah, what is the current estimated date that Gree hopes to release 4.2? This is the specific question everyone in this thread wants to know. What is your specific answer as to specifically which day, or failing that, a range of dates?

We understand that drelease dates might later slip, but lack of a date estimate given this bug is costing thousands of people overage charges on our data plans - just ain't cool. Is it a day, a week, a month? Something please. Thx!

Whoa - that is a LOT of data, and I'm not immediately aware of any changes that we'd expect to bump data usage up. We're going to check this out.


I am with AT&T and had to been on 6GB plan since November and only used half of my data plan.

I had to upgrade to 10GB. No changes in the way I use my iPad Air.

When are we getting an answer or fix Gree?

I have accounts on 3 different carriers, AT&T, Verizon and Consumer Cellular, and got huge data spikes on all 3 starting over a month ago. I mostly use wifi, and had never come close to my data limits, until last month, and all due to MW.

2 iPads I use only for MW and nothing else. Both hit 4GB 1/2 way into the 30 day cycles. 1 is on AT&T and the other on Verizon. So,..., don't think it's the carriers fault!

We need to know how much a little longer is please. It's now been 4 days. There will be less upset customers if your just honest. Tell us it's going to be at least 30 days, knowing we'll be upset to hear that. We will be much less upset not knowing and dragging us on for 30 more days.

In meantime now that you have identified the problem please tell us what we can do to reduce excessive data usage until the problem is fixed. Perhaps less raiding/attacking, don't or do close app out all the way, etc? Not asking for a lot, just 5mins of your time.

I mean A LOT!

it seems a simple / quick check is upwards of 50m

for those folks with um-limited data plans, some are getting killed!

gree, do you do analysis of the usage? can you provide any stats of what an active player, say 10x logins daily, some scouting, hitting, checking buildings, and such may look like for usage on a player with a fair sized army. 10k units, all standard buildings and almost all of the limiteds.

Have a friend at 8gb of data for the month in KA alone. Asked gree about this and got no response.

**** just about every major town I visit has had some type of free wifi, travel alot for business and don't have much an issue. Chicago, Denver, many parts of Michigan. Guess I am just lucky!!

Repeatedly been said as soon as iTunes approves the update a possible fix will be released. Unfortunately this one is out of their hands if it is true waiting on iTunes. I had an app that took over 2 weeks for approval on a update to be released. Not sticking up for Gree by any means but that is the process

I have always been a moderate gold user, sometimes pushing more to the heavy side. I promised myself after a week of this nonsense that I wouln't spend one dime on this game until it gets resolved. Happy to say, I've stuck to that promise. And to be honest, my stats haven't really flinched and I tend not to care as much about what's going on in the game anymore. Probably will stay gold free.

Kind of an oxi-moron. People complain because it hasn't been released yet now all the sudden worry about quality control. Maybe if people would give them time to release new content there might be better quality control without the pressure. Just a thought

Don't blame gree only on this one ,if you remember right Gree forced into a quick release of update by sup. Last WD sup said they won't play wd if gree didn't release a update on glitching players. Well we wouldn't be here right now *****ing about data usage cause would they have had more time. I have talked to multiple faction on this one that extremely upset with this not being able sign in because of this data surge. If this isn't fixed by WD my faction and about 30 faction in top 100-150 we not play wd if there isn't fix by time event start. So let see if gree gives us the same service has sup. The big difference between us and sup we actually mean it!!

There was update morning of WD caused by sup *****es seem only time when thing getdone. When sup says something idk if there was update after that . I just rem being pissed because sup says something gree are all hands on deck

But I think you'll find this issue pre dates the last WD. Gree has history releasing glitch after glitch, though they do fix the ones costing them money pretty quick they, to put it nicely, some what slower when its costing others money.
Not that I bame you for being pissed about the above. Though you might find its all hands to the pumps, this boat seems to be sinking fast,

I tested it and just opening MW and collecting cash from my buildings and putting it in the vault used up about 5.5MB, in less than 3 minutes of usage. In 20 minutes and with MW closed, it went up by 0.40MB.

So I decided to turn off all push notifications and such.

Another question is when MW opens, what data is being downloaded and uploaded? Is the content being downloaded every time we open MW, even if the device has the latest content?

At this rate, I might be only able to use it with WiFi only.

My plan is 5gb and I have easily exceeded that amount. AT&T sold me 1gm more and within a few hours I got a text message that it had been exceeded as well and that they added another 1gb. My plan is only 1/2 way through the month. What has GREE done now?

On one account, I got 7 x $10 1GB overage charges in the 1st 15 days, with cellular turned off most of the time. "soon" isn't good enough! When is 4.22being released? If not soon, then shut down the game until "soon" becomes "now."

and nod what is Gree's plan for reimbursement? Do I submit the overage notices?

FYI, Apple is investigating Gree because of all of complaints and refund requests. This may be delaying any update they are trying to release to resolve this issue.

30 days for this thread. It was May 12th when I first got hit and the 15th when I opened my ticket and mentioned it in faction chat with FromAfar.

Got excited when I got home and saw update notification in the app store. Got my hopes up....but only Candy Crush and YouTube. Alas, there was no four two two in whoville. Bc GREE's heart is three sizes too small.

This should have never taken this long to fix. This is a MASSIVE data bleed. This is the kind of thing that gets apps banned from iTunes. Verizon sent me an email about Modern War, telling me to stop using it. Unbelievable that we still have to wait for this to be fixed. What's Gree's intention of reimbursing us for blowing up our data plan? Maybe iTunes can help us since we're not getting anywhere here. Others in my faction have been banned from using work wifi because of MW data bleed. They've blocked the app altogether. It's been 30 days already, no one is patient anymore.

You just had an update, they don't need to tell you anything. Like they have said many times, iTunes is approving the next update. If you don't know, it does take a while when a new version is launched. This isn't just a hotfix

This is not an update. We already know nothing and looky here. Nothing. What in game function is causing the data bleed so we can at least try to work around it. I used more than 9gb of data last month. Is it ads?. It's it server syncing and there is nothing we can do?. Is it constantly reloading temp files?. Let us know what you guys know. Cost me over $100.00 so far

The latest update to MW hasn't been released yet. From what I have seen, v4.2 of MW is supposed to fix the issue. AGAIN, something that should have been picked up in QA prior to release. To me it just seems like there is a laid back attitude to the development and it's released even with issues.
