How Much Is First Place Really Worth?

We've been lately witnessing the massive amounts of IP being scored in battles, especially between TAW and SAS.
This was not the first battle where SAS score a very high IP score which is really too expensive just to try and get 1st place, but they still end up second anyway.
The question is, for both TAW and SAS, is 1st place really worth that much of gold and money used ?
Can't just any of you save your self some $$ and take 2nd place for granted ?

I don't think TAW or SAS is really approaching these contests from a "value of the prize" approach, it's simple competition, a rather deep dislike some from each side have for the other, and a simple desire to win instead of lose.

I made a list of how I would like SAS to finish in order of preference. My #1 choice is first place, all streaks, for 30m. My #2 choice is second place, all streaks, for 30m.

First place with streaks for 127m or first place with no streaks for 60m are further down the list.

I'm still shocked they haven't realized AoW's infinite gold pool and continue fighting for #1 and not just beat out #3.

SAS might have them too but they just don't know it. The #1 place is the carrot dangling in front of the donkey - there is always hope to reach it (or so they are led to believe) but they'll never reach it.

Very nicely put. It is an FC vs. FC war, artificially created, possibly involving lots of "artificial" players too. AoW and SAS are just shells, like human bodied taken over by alien parasites (cf. the dumped shell Lights Out). AoW didn't win; SAS didn't either. FC and Gree did.
