View Full Version : Sexism/objectification of women in gaming.

Why the girls always gotta have big boobies spilling out of skimpy armor and the dudes always badass-looking and fully armored up...things like that?

I mean...this comes from GREE's Dragon Age.

I like hot girls with big thingies, too...but always seeing women hyper-sexualized is boring. As a red-blooded male, it's even almost a bit offensive.

To usually attract male players from what I can tell it irritates me that they do it allot but then in a way I don't complain when a game over ecsessive uses it then it just ridicouls

agreed guys there it is getting out of hand. once in awhile sure but not 8 or 9 chars in a game need to be that way.

Eh it is what it is. Games are generally marketed towards a male audience and sex sells. I've grown to ignore it over the years.

Because most men want to objectify women solely by how they look while women should be valued because they are women. That about sums it up.

This used to bother me. I've gotten used to it after a while, and it doesn't bother me all that much. I do wonder how they come out of fights without a scratch though. Skin of steel?

I agree . It's a huge problem

hmmm I think the reason is quite obvious, Gaming is predominantly a Hobby for males therefore game developers believe that they will get a larger player base by trying to make there Animated/fake characters seductive. A great example of this League Of Legends, Just recently a new champion "Jinx" was added into the game, and because her tits were not bigger then Gragas' (you'll only get that if you've played it :P) Riot Games copped abuse. I mean She was still barely wearing any clothes but because she was not appealing to the eyes of some poor sensitive 40 year old virgin pedophiles, The company got crap for it.

Good point to bring up ;)

Men are considered "better" if they are strong.
Women are considered "better" if they are sexy.

That's just nature... men choose women mostly according to phisical appeareances, while women are attracted to "strong" men that can protect the sons.

No sexism, imo

As a female gamer myself i think it is quite annoying. I mean, when i pick a female character i want a badass option too. Instead of the 'long dress' or the ' you wear so less armor you're going to get yourself killed' option.

I don't think its sexist though. I mean the main audiance is males, so don't expect to see fine dressed women or males walking around without a shirt xD

I often end up with male characters though because i dont want to walk around in a dress or half-naked.

Bad ass looks for the win ! c:

Same here! Got a white leader with a squad of nubian warrior princesses.

It's been awhile since I've seen Game of Thrones, and I've only seen up to season 2, but there is that big chick that is a major asskicker. Chicks should be like that.

I understand the the "I won't complain" response, but doesn't it get boring? They aren't real, anyways. They're polygons, pixels and paint.

Not caring because it doesn't negatively impact you is not a good position to take. You should care if Jews are being persecuted, if blacks are being prejudiced against, if women are being treated as nothing more than objects of sexual gratification for men and if children are being abused even if you aren't a little black Jewish girl.

Objectification of women as little more than sexual servants is why we have the Kardashian culture of girls who, while they may certainly be attractive, are vapid and dumb as rocks.

This shallow, materialistic culture is your fault unless you oppose it.

I think it's gross. I'd especially hope that anyone with a daughter agrees with me.

You will get use to it over time. But on that know why is it every male hero has that "idea body" when most of the guys that are playing are at best a fat skinny.

I call this the "Chainmail Bikini" style...armor that covers as much as a bikini would, only in armored materials (and just as useless).

I found a male version, but beware, it WILL make your eyes bleed: http://i.imgur.com/q8bMI.jpg

I am a female gamer and over the years, I've "gotten used to it", provided the game designers don't insult my intelligence TOO much, or throw my sexuality in my face by giving me a stacked female "warrior" (it is to laugh) squeezed into an outfit two sizes too small in gear that wouldn't protect a flea. C'mon, guys... ;)

You bring up another point, Sol Invictus: The impossibly long/huge/heavy/overclocked sword/hammer/gun/weapon. This is especially ludicrous when one's character is less than 90 pounds soaking wet, but even Conan the Barbarian would find it difficult to CARRY (much less wield) Leonheart's sword from FF7. I find similar weight ratio discrepancies in most games (and your picture above)...brings to mind the whole African or European swallow discussion, ya know?

blah blah.

Its all fantasy. If you ever saw an armored woman back in the day, they weren't scantily clad. They were in full garb.

This isn't real life, its fantasy. I'm sorry that the majority of gamers are male and they gear things specifically towards them. DOA Beach Volleyball anyone? Please, let me know how many girls actually purchased that game, or played it and didn't find it sexist. But to also add in the complaint about giant weapons and guns that a 100 lb person is carrying... again, if you want realism, you're in the wrong genre. You don't like it? Go make your own realistic fantasy game. A fat middle aged guy playing in his underwear, with a pizza box and empty red bull cans as his weapons of choice.

Again, you're all idiots. And you deserve each other.

Women don't need armor.

Our pheromones ward off magic spells, our chests deflect physical damage, and our natural psycho tendencies protect against any and all psychic attacks!

Or at least that seems to be what developers believe...

At least in games like Halo and Borderlands the females are mostly, if not completely covered. So there are a few that try to appeal to egalitarianism.

personally, i dont care. sex sells? sure! but these are cartoon drawings, i dont see the appeal...
my only objection is if im playing on my tablet on the subway or something, say playing criminal legacy, and all the sudden the 'fight new epic boss' thing comes up and its a some half-naked stripper, anyone catching a glance over my shoulder is gonna be thinking im some 'white trash perv or something' (to quote joe dirt).
I kinda think they do it on purpose though, not because of the 'sex sells' thing, but hoping a large womens group (or whatever) will complain and go on cnn or the view or tmz or where ever and in turn get them a ton of free advertising.

I honestly rarely get offended, unless the lack of clothing is REALLY noticeable. I've been seeing under-clothed sims for years in games, armored (ha!) or not. But I recognize the hypocrisy of it all...

The sheer stupidity of it becomes readily apparent if we switch genders:

Easiest way to get socially awkward less appealing males into a game, its still a predominantly male passtime, when the females outnumber the males, bikini armor will switch genders.

A seperate question, if a females blouse shows 1/3 to 1/2 of her bossom, should she be angry when a male looks?

Rookeye

You are a rare thing in modern times, an honest woman....i agree with your general complaint of games, and say it goes back to mechanized games of the late 19thin century. However the female characters in games are unrealistic in shape ( read stick without curves ) this is a sorry attempt at a truly beautiful natural form

Fun fact: It's about 50/50 at this point in terms of gender.

Developers are slowly taking notice and some of these types of items are shifting. Please be careful on this topic; there is quite a bit of news on this right now in the gaming industry and harassment has gotten a little out of control to say the least.

I'm pretty content with the armor for this game. To be honest I like the fashionable yet impractical armor I get from playing other games. I know if I were to go to war IRL that I'd be covered head to toe. But I think I'd look damn good in that chain mail bikini (if only I had the body to go with it) that I see in some other mmo's .

I always thought it was a bit weird that women had no clothes on when I was younger, so I think it is a bit weird that games dress women that way. On the other hand, it is most of the time sexy and games want to attract guys to play it. What I would like to know is: what does my gender think of it? Would you not buy a game because you see a big boobed almost nude women on the front or don't you care? I think I am used to it now. I don't like it, I don't dislike it. I just think games are made by some horny guys who like to dress.. Or undress their fantasy girls.

Davis Buck

Armor is heavy so if it were a female character in it she would have to be super buff and with limited screen size for phone games itd be way harder to tell the difference by the time you add all that armor theyd just look the same so might as well just take out the ability to choose the character sex anx determine by name. Otherwise your just digging to be offended do you also get offended when walking up to the bathroom and seeing a triangle on the woman. Heavy armor would make you slower to in that pick the chick would be way faster and have a good chance at victory would at least have the option of retreat wheras the armored guy could just run

Rookeye
01-18-2015, 08:37 AM
I watched an interesting documentary once on Joan of Arc, asking if a 17 year old farm girl could have worn the armor of the day into battle (full armor/battle dress). The answer came back that at the time, a full suit of armor in her day was made of steel, would have weighed a mere 40 lbs, and any stout farm lass used to shoveling ditches would have NO problem.

So the only problem in games is when they design unspeakably heavy or unreasonably large armor/weapons. Naturally, since it's all FANTASY, there is no "problem" there, and we next come to an issue of modesty/realism.

I personally find it laughable that the female characters in MOST games are clad in little more than a few triangles for protection, while the lads are bulked up in full war gear...one of the things I appreciate here at KnD is that male and female are equally armored for battle. But again, games are fantasy; if it doesn't bug you, play on! ;)
