Is there a resource anywhere detailing how damage is calculated in this game?
I've been thinking a lot about what's more important between ATK/DEF and I've come to the conclusion that until I know how each of them affects the damage calculation, I can't be sure which is more valuable.
If ATK & DEF both have the exact same modifier, then it makes no difference what the balance on your armor is, and total combined stats would be the only stat that matters.

Whether to weight attack or defense higher would also depend on what you want to use the armor for. For farming mats, a high defense is more preferable, because a one shot kill on an enemy is one attack whether you kill twice or 5 times its hit points, where as the high your defense the less damage you will take.
Fighting an epic boss on the other hand, you might give preference to attack, since its value can be doubled with the use of friends. A dual element matchup further increases its value (Fire/Spirit against Spirit/Earth for example)
In the arena, I can't say. I don't know of any calculator that has solved the att / def equation. Knowing how they effect each other exactly could certainly help you, but it's not the only consideration to make :)

Sorry I should have specified that I'm only concerned with armor performance in arena/guild wars

I'm still working on that myself. I can tell you that I'm pretty sure, like 95% confidence, that pvp is calculated using different coefficients (or completely differently) than pve is. I haven't been able to come up with anything that I could call a formula though. In pve though, your base damage seems to go up by approximately 2 per level, but I'm not sure if it's linear or not.

A damage calculator for arena/guild wars may not be that useful. There are way too many variations for the damage calculator to work effectively. There's a matter of whether of not the armor your opponent is using is + or non +, what's the guild bonus for your opponent and what armor of theirs is maxed or not maxed. It'll ultimately be more effective to just use an armor with effective elements instead of wasting time figuring out how much damage you would do.

Friends with Epic Bosses don't multiple Attack, they multiply Damage. I know that sounds the same, but its really not.
If it actually multiplied attack, you'd be better off with a high attack armor, because the higher value would be getting the modifier, (IE, you'd get more from the modifier), which I think you understand.
The thing is, it modifies DAMAGE, and there are plenty of cases where lower attack/higher defense armors end up doing more damage because they get more attacks. In most cases, its a wash, with evenly balanced armors 1250/1250 performing slightly better than armors weighted one way 1500/1000 or 1000/1500.
