My syndicate members said they didn't have to do anything other than log in yesterday to get it. I logged in but didn't. What were the criteria for this giveaway?

No event - it was a freebie to mark the 2nd anniversary of the Gree takeover

Incorrect. CC is two years old. Gree only took over last year, before the 1 year anniversary.

I think it was a ~60 stat gun.

Was the Thanksgiving Turkey explosive a consumable? I've seen it in various inventories but always at a count of 0 (I had just been assuming it was a freebie too)

Yes, it was consumable. It dropped in PvP during a PvP event (same deal with snowballs, toilet paper and footballs).

I'm surprised they didn't do that with the birthday cake too. In a way it would have made more sense. Instead of everyone getting it rendering it virtually meaningless, as a consumable you have a risk-laden opportunity to punch above your weight - maybe for a big rob or something.
(Realise this is not relevant to the upper echelons, but for the majority of average Joes)

The old PvPs were based on number of wins, so dropping high-stat consumables created more activity. With the point system the consumables would make the payouts go crazy.
Also, the old events tended to have a moderate item for a small set number of wins, a slightly better item for a larger number of wins (usually one that required very moderate, but above 0 gold expenditure) and a top 10 prize.
There are way more prizes now (obviously with much, much higher stats).
I'd love an old-style event again, but I can't see it happening.

Was there a first year present?
The first anniversary celebration was actually made into an event as opposed to a pointless item giveaway (give everyone the same item is the same as giving nothing to anyone).
Top 25 big earners won a prize, top 25 people who attacked the largest number of DIFFERENT rivals got a prize, the top 25 who did the most jobs got a prize, and there was a more complicated robbery portion of the event too. It was supposed to be a top 25 thing too but the wording was too vague and it ended up being (almost) top 50.
All 4 categories of the event had different prizes, and each prize had a modifier.
