Hi,

I was wondering if any of you have ever been invited to a faction where the control is with someone else?

I have been invited many times to join a "top 250 faction" but have declined. What would stop the faction leader from taking your donations and then booting you out? Is there any form of safety net to prevent this?

Donate slowly. And if you're going to join, join possibly 2-3 days before a war. Don't donate concrete and cash all at once. Be slow. Once you feel you can trust them, then you can donate normally.

The thing to remember is there is almost no benefit for a faction doing what you just described.
In the end its about teamwork and reaching a common goal.
Making Donations is such a small part of the effort.

I would imagine most factions Rank: WD, Friendship, FVF all higher than donations.

Thief makes a good point. At some point all people are recruits and joining the unknown, even the players in your own faction. There are tonnes of great factions out there.
