both, you buy three and can win 3 commons, 2 commons one rare etc... but the chance of getting the rare is higher

3 crates = 3 units.

They're the same units you would get for individual crates, but gold price is discounted a bit, and the probability of rare/better units go up a bit as well. You won't know in advance what you get, but if you do arithmetic on probabilities 3 at once is a pretty good deal versus one at a time.
