That depends on how inflated the players defence is.

Generally someone can rob people with 50% higher true defense than their attack.

As bala said, the real issue here is probably inflated defense stats.

i'm actually pretty annoyed about the whole def buildings thing as I've bought gold buildings, surely this is misrepresentation and grew should either give us the def stats owing or a refund?

I'd recommend calculating your Defense without any of your Defense buildings being upgraded (They seem to stop giving the actual displayed Defense after about level 2 or 3). You'll get an idea of what your true Defense really is. I just keep mine upgraded to 10 because it looks nice

There are threads on the issue. And some of it is possibly the hacker thing. We had a 465 attack (PA account) beat a 177K defense in last war.

It's really easy to figure out how much defense a building is giving. You subtract the base (level 1) defense, divide by 2, then add the original defense. Each defense building upgrade only gives you half of the written value. So a building at level 10 will only give you 55% of its written value.
