What is the purpose of having defence for the armour and weapon equipped by your character?

The defense from your equipped weapon counts for your over all defense, just as your attack from your armor counts for attack.

I have wondered the same thing. I guess the theory is that it increases the chances that an attack will miss in the PvE, however, I reckon it is as useful as the attack/defence skill points and equally obscure.

Another example of a person who doesn't read carefully.

Sorry. I'm not being mean. I just wanted to up my post count but had nothing constructive to add.

As my overall defensive stat from weapons and armor has gone up, I have noticed an increase in the number of times enemies miss. It's been especially evident with enemies that I farm when I got the Brisingamen which severely increased my defensive rating.

The difference between this and the army attack/defense is that with army attack/defense you're rivals can negate it by increasing theirs, as well. However, mobs do not have the ability to counteract you increasing your PvE defense.

Yes I would have hoped that lower level monsters would miss more times than they hit with high level armour. But it just doesn't seem the case. The amount of influence that these numbers have on the end result appear to be slight at best.
If you are getting more misses than hits then lucky you.
