Influence points when defending attack

When you are attacked and win, does your syndicate earn influence points?

Also, when you win an attack, are the amount of influence points random or does it depend on the players stats that you attack?

There seems to be a consistency that wen I attack someone higher level then me (20-40 levels higher) I get more influence points then when I attack a lower or equal level.

It's not affected by stats though.
