The problem with changing it would be sort of betraying the current buyers.
Their "investment" would be greatly decreased in value!
And as pouring salt on the wounds, they would have had payed overprice for that "investment"!

Actually, one solution would be to gift them an amount of gold proportional to what they've spent so their investment is equally strong in the new inflated economy!
