When I first started I mistakenly thought that those 2 stats would be very important for pvp later on down the line. I piled a lot of points in to those 2 stats before I realized that that was a big mistake. Can anyone tell me, what part do those 2 stats play in anything and are they useful at all? Thanks in advance for your replies! 8)

Very little... Get decent stamina, and dump the rest of the points to Hero Strength.

I know this now but, what I was wondering was, what was there original intent with those 2 attributes? Did they actually have a purpose or was it just a place to throw points away for those of us who were unaware?

Those stats increase your chances of winning. Attack gives you a mystery boost to your chance to defeat an opponent when attacking. Defense give you a mystery boost to your chance of winning when you are attacked. They have a purpose and they indeed do something, but they are not worth it.
For example, let's say you have 10 skill points in attack and I have 10 skill points in defense. If you attack me, your attack gets the same boost as my defense and it's a wash. It'd be like if you put $100 in your bank, and I put $100 in my bank and your bank gave you ten bonus dollars and my bank gave me ten bonus dollars. Sure, we've both improved, but neither has gained an advantage over the other.
Of course, one could argue that if you put 20 points in attack and I only put 10 points in attack, you then have an advantage over me, but those people would be wrong.
In the long run, you'll get more value for putting two skill points in Hero Strength to increase it by 1 than by using two skill points to increase attack or defense by 2. You'll be able to kill enemies faster, get gold quicker, and buy better units faster, thus giving you a static and better boost to your military. Plus, it will help you get through these PvE LTQs faster, allowing you to go further or spend fewer gems (if that's your cup of tea.) So, by me putting my points into Hero Strength, I'll end up with the advantage over you. Of course, this is assuming all other variables are equal, such as boost buildings. For the sake of this example, and to accurately compare Attack/Defense to Hero Strength, we are assuming just that.
