I have a solution that will result in happier players and more gold for Gree.
1) Take the current 10 item format, but make it so that each open gives better losing swag depending on how many boxes you get. So if you're trying to open that 9th or 10th box, instead of getting a 12/13 motorcycle or 10,000 dollars, make it a 40/50 vehicle and 5000 RP or 10,000,000 dollars.
2) Establish a policy that says if you do X gold unlocks/time resets, you get the 10th item. maybe set this at 20 or 30 opens.
The end result will be that people are encouraged to spend more gold. Those who have enough will be assured of getting the 10th item, and even those who come up short (though they still could get lucky) will at least receive something of value for their gold instead of 10,000 in game cash and worthless items.
Do you want the game to be fun, with players feeling good after an event? Or do you want them to feel like compulsive gamblers who just got conned?
