This isn't about whether or not you use gems or money to fund your attacks; This is about a method I have developed to maximize attacks against the Epic Boss and increase my chances of defeating him. The reason I am sharing it is to see if anyone can find any flaws in it, if anyone knows of a better way, or if my math is wrong.
As you know, when you go into the battle against the Epic Boss at full health you can hit him four times before you lose all your health. Once you lose your health, you have to wait twenty-five minutes before you can hit him again. Even then it's still just one hit every twenty-five minutes.
So, here's what I do.
I enter the battle at full health and only attack him three times. This way he doesn't kill me. Health will regenerate while on this screen, so I wait about three minutes or so and then go for another hit. Now I have hit him four times, but I still have some energy left for a fifth it. This way I get five hits at the start of the battle instead of four.
Also, I wait twenty-eight minutes before going back for another round. This way I can get in two hits instead of one. Two hits every twenty-eight minutes will give you more opportunities to attack him in that two hour battle than one hit every twenty-five minutes.
Here is a chart showing my my math:

This chart assumes you attack immediately each round during the two hour battle. However, you do not have to, as there is some wiggle room built into the two strategies. My method allows you only fourteen minutes of wiggle room while the traditional method provides nineteen. I suggest using a timer for this.
This chart also assumes that you are at full health when the Epic Boss battle begins. I highly recommend this during the higher levels, even if it means not attacking anything or anyone for an hour or two while your health regenerates. Early on you can ignore your health meter if he's weak enough to take out using fewer than the maximum number of hits.
As you can see, using my strategy you can get up to 13 hits in a two hour battle, no gems. Using the traditional method of attacking every twenty-five minutes, you can get up to 8 hits per two-hour battle, no gems, 9 hits if you wait until the 103 minute mark for the final round instead of the 101 minute mark. That's 4-5 extra hits against the Epic Boss in one battle.
