Any ideas why this is happening?At first I thought it was from meeting forum folks in-game, sending my code via comment and others picking up on it; then I started actually looking at these randos and they were at random levels that wouldn't have been in the same circles as HL forumites.

I've been meaning to change it back, but I only had this picture on my laptop. Usually I'm either on my ipad or my work computer. I wouldn't say I'm "nervous" tonight because I expect them to lose. So far I'm very pleasantly surprised :)

Well, just ignore them :p It's mostly players in the invite section trying to get their account started under the suspicion that they don't need to understand why but that they just need a lot.

This is a somewhat misguided belief in the fact that they need to know why the specific reasons to have a certain number, but most are just adding thousands in the belief that they're getting "stronger".
