How many posts per page?

It seems many times I'm reading the Jersey Shore threads and someone inevitably says "it took 282 pages...." when I'm on page 6*. Does everyone really use the default posts per page (10?) instead of 40 (the max)? If so - any reason other than just not knowing about it?

I have 40/page... I mostly use my old iPad to read the forum.
