buy units with high defense, get a composite factory, or get defense buildings

Military Ambulances, Sea Scouts, Mine Launchers, Stealth Surveillance Drones (whichever is easiest for you to afford at the moment, and buy lots as in hundreds to notice a big effect).

Also boost buildings, especially the Composite factory.

What helped me early on was farming the amphibious trooper from the amphibious squad leader at the Docks. 100% drop rate for a 6/8 unit which helps boost stats early on. And obviously if you have the gold buy the composite factory and upgrade to 10 for the 20% boost.
