Apparently the developers screwed up and those of us with the most recent Android update can buy every "limited item" that has ever been released (or at least a lot of them). I used it as an opportunity to document all of the limited gold explosives:

Doing the math, there are only a few items where you get more bang for your gold - the Demoltion charge and the thermobaric grenade. By the time you get to the 900 gold items you're basically paying 2 gold for each attack or defense point. If money is no object this makes the most sense, or if you're in a situation where you can keep your mafia low and those you attack/that attack you are at a similarly low mafia number.
The other way to document value is the swing in points: I assume to most of us, a 120 item is more valuable to us if it has 110 offense or 110 defense versus an even 60/60 split between the two. The toxic grenade, thermobaric grenade, and charged TNT seem to offer the best value as far as the dramatic swings in offense/defense.
I bought a few of the demolition charges. I don't have time to go through the cars/guns/etc but they seem to follow the same pattern, with the difference being more attack/defense points per gold spent at the lowest levels. Once you get to 900/950 gold they seem to get to 400/450/500 points each.
