Holy Box Event!

[Crime City Mark]

Starting now, and going on for four days, this event will work like the standard leaderboard box event.

The top 250 players will get the Holy Avenger, giving them 10% faster building upgrades. The top 50 will receive the Grand Dragon of Light, reducing the number of allies their opponents bring to battle by 3!

The absolute #1 player in this event will receive Hyperion, Champion of Light, our first heroic unit. This massive dragon is not only the most powerful unit in the game, but causes your rivals to use 4 fewer allies in battle!

Are the boxes randomly put in different maps? I've never had trouble getting boxes; now I've only gotten despite 20 PvE and 10 PvP hits and wins.
Is the drop rate higher than, equal to or less than the last two Top 50 events?

Like I even care about the difference of who chooses to do these events? Did you really think it was important to point it out to me? I also don't care about how it affects my game play as I still have higher stats than many gem players my level.
This game was really good and now it is just a cash cow on its last leg. And yes I still play, but that's because I'm smart enough not to waste any of my money or time on events like these.

I like the wording on the Hyperion unit - "Whoever EARNS the most Gems Of Light" as if there is a way to earn these??? Gree should be honest and state what it is - a blatant auction so that the biggest spender can wave his e-penis around.

I really have a hard time believing the fair chance (supposedly 45%) is that at all when I've used the gold option to try and open 6 boxes and only opened one (thankfully for a gem). So far that's less than 20%, right around the gold option open rate for the previous events. Glad I learned from my first event spending gems wasn't worth it, and now apparently it seems gold isn't worth it either. Technically the gold is free from farming monsters and completing quests, but at 1100+ per hour for an unfairly labeled "fair" chance to open, I'd rather spend the gold on units and building upgrades that are guaranteed.

Seriously Funzio, you guys really just seem to be pissing people off with these events, despite the cash grabs you've made over the past month. As others have said, this is a short term thing at best, and you're repeatedly alienating the free players and moderate gem purchasers (like myself who spent on average $20-40 a week on this game... At least until a few weeks ago when I lost patience with these events).

They really are completely demolishing whatever strategic aspect this game used to have. Granted, there should be bonuses for big money spenders on occasion, but it's going overboard at this point.

In the INFO to the event it says "remember ties are determined by level" - is it possible that with lower (than X) level you have a good chance to lets say open 5 gems, than the chance drops significantly? Can someone confirm this? Because it makes sense, giving lower levels players units with 50 or 100 attack is not balanced.

I like the new events, but hate that the duration of them keeps getting shorter and shorter. Which indicates they want you to spend money just to get a pixelated unit before the timer runs out. If people want to waste hundreds of dollars on game so be it.

I'm 3/8 thus far on this event(middle option). Hopefully lady luck will be on my side again!

Oh please. People have a right to complain when a product they pay for (specifically us gem buyers) fails to satisfy. I understand you're a Funzio apologist, and I am too to a degree, but these events are not only in poor taste, but seriously toeing the line of ethical business practices. Again, my only gripe is the gold option, while advertised as fair and specifically labeled as 45% chance to open, in my experience and that of the many other posters here, is anything but, and certainly not 45%. I've tried to open 11 boxes with the "fair" option, had 2 open (thankfully for gems). I would prefer to use the Rusty Knife option but I'm intent on logging the open results for gold option for this event.

I've spent on average $20-40 per week on this game (though no longer on the events, just guaranteed units and gem buildings in the store), so I feel I have a right to let the company know I'm not happy with how they handle these events, between the less than honest chance rates, the "freezing" of the leaderboards towards the end of events, etc.

I agree Funzio has every right to make money, but I'd like to see them do that for the long term. It's blatantly evident from the reactions to these events that people are quitting the game in droves, many of those being gem buyers. How many companies last when it seems a majority of their customers stop spending money on their product? I love this game and want to see it continue, but honestly am starting to worry about the long term viability of this business approach they've adopted since being purchased by GREE.

If I wanted to play roulette, I'd go to a casino. And yes, I know I don't have to play the events, but honestly the free units (which I am appreciative of, don't get me wrong) are nice, and now the top 250/50 prizes are creating a huge and untraversable gulf between the few dozen who win them and the rest of us. It's literally destroying a large element of the game's strategy.

And seriously, "butthurt" and "e-penis" are two terms entirely overused on these forums. If we're going to throw derogatory terms around, is a bit of originality and imagination too much to ask for? Seriously this isn't an elementary school playground. ;) I'm kidding, of course, as if you read the TOS it should be kept civil.

The 'ties are determined by levels' statement means that when it comes to awarding the prize for the top 50 / 250 if there 10 people tied for the last 5 places, those in the higher levels will get the prize over those on a lower level even though they have the same number of eggs, gems, vials etc.

I do think being bracketed would be better for everybody that didn't spend loads of money, but I'd have to agree with The_Red that it would probably be unfair to the big spenders. IMHO, you just can't create such huge and unique advantages to those that spend money. Yes, its a great way to get people willing to spend money to actually spend that money, but it creates an uneven playing field that is hard to ever recover from.

Games of this genre that hold my attention the best are ones that give incentive to spend money but don't create a huge advantage if you do. Such as allowing you to speed up your gameplay if you spend money, but not giving something that a "free" player couldn't catch up to if given enough time. These unique items you're basically auctioning off to the highest bidder give a lasting advantage that can never really be overcome by other players at all. Yes, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but perception often is reality and if thats they way people feel then they will lose interest and quit.

I think that's a good idea, you could give it a large enough range that the heavier spenders would still have an advantage but the crafty player in the lower end of the range could still compete. Not sure hw many levels and dollar amounts you could bracket it in to as that would be determined by volume

Anyone who has ever turned on "god mode" for a game knows that it is fun for a bit but then it gets boring after a while. that's what is happening with these events, only they are paying out the nose for it. What would be worse than paying for godmode is paying for godmode but only facing others who have godmode.

And for the free players the problem is becoming the easy pickings for the heavy spenders with the godmode-like stats. They will grow tired and quit. This then brings you back to the previously mentioned problem. This ultimately causes the game to destabilize and then it's game over, man. Game over.

Ultimately, the problem here is the shortsighted decisions that favored economic gain over game balance and longevity.
Honestly, I am confident that this problem will only continue to snowball and cause this game to fail quickly.

Thinking out loud.

Separate the spenders into gem and gold buyers.
Set few brackets according to number/aggregate AD of indestructible units, put a Factor/Multiplier/XYZ on the reward of PvP.
Same bracket, reward = normal.
Indestructible bracket high wins over bracket low, reward less than normal
Indestructible bracket low wins over bracket high, reward more than normal
Continuously put in mega/super destructible units, to be purchased or as event awards. (a personal request here, use a different graphic design for different unit please!)

This will not cut off company's income, people tend to buy gold instead of gem if the higher return is attractive.

This should also avoid or delay the DEAD END scenario, while few players are holding bunch of indestructible units and there is not enough food for these whales. Both whale and plankton groups are not happy with the game and period.

Well, after a lot of problems in getting even the first box, finally managed to get going on this event. All middle option and a couple of tries with a rusty knife when I didn't have enough gold for the middle option (my first priorities of upgrading, etc, have not changed because of this event given its shorter timeframe and seemingly poorer open rates). Currently at 5 gems and first unit. Getting the sixth gem is proving difficult.

Happy to get the indestructible units, but the event format is, I must admit, getting stale. Agree with all the other posters that I wish the pictures (sorry - don't know the correct term) could be unique rather than reused ones.

I like the events but I like the 3,5,7,9,10 events better. That way everyone can receive the units, even free players with luck. I know it's business to change formats but what took GREE so long to offer a top prize. I thought they would have offered that on the first 5,10,15,20 50/500 event which I thought was a better format than the 25/250. Go back to the 50/500 event and increase the chances of getting a gem/vial/ring. I think this will make free players happier that they have a better chance to get to the 20 unit and increase the base for gem spenders. Let's be frank, the top 50/500 are mostly gem spenders. Keep both happy.

Why not do other events that aren't auctions. People aren't mad that you want to make money or how much other people spend. The problem is there is no difference between offering up a gem unit in the store and your "events". The events have become blind auctions where people bid for an item. Keep events that make people spend money just add a challenge to or element of strategy. You know you could make more money if you allow an increase in drops from vials for none money spenders. It forces those with the time and skill to spend more money to keep up and allows everyone in game a chance to compete. Or award people units for slaying monsters or pvp. While you at it make pvp have a bigger consequence. Then tell us what's up with the item drops from mobs and whine your going to fix the units removed from upgrading buildings.

I would add a feature which has reward tiers by number of boxes collected too. Knowing people who shell out the cash for gems will take most prizes, why not reward those who play the most too? ? That way, you incent both.

Been stuck at 6 for over 24 hours. I'm having the worst luck with this event, or the odds have been "adjusted".

Seriously though, the gold option is still labeled as a "fair" chance when it's anything but. Definitely the last event I waste gold on.

I mix gold and free buttons. I think it is 20-25% and 10-15%.

I can't understand one thing. If I use gold button and for example 5 times (usualy it is more then 5 times) it is sorry it costs for my level in sum 8500 gold. I can buy 2 flaming catapult - 7200 gold. It will give me 68 attack and 32 defense. 5 times sorry doesn't give anything.

To get 10 crystals I thing I have to open about 30-50 boxes and pay for that 51k-85k gold - I will get 2 units = 73 attack 88 defense. On this money I can buy 20 flaming catapult and it will be 680 attack and 320 defense...

Something wrong with my math?

@ muddy - your Maths is probably correct (I didn't check) but the point of the event is getting indestructible, unique units ... yes, if the pictures were unique too, that would have been better, but still. The other thing is ... It's not real gold unless you paid real world money for it. Just get these units whilst you can for the fun of it, and you can buy all the other units a little later.

In a similar position as you, but decided to throw in the towel and go for rusty knife only since I had my doubts that I would be able to get 5 gems with less than 24 hours left (especially after factoring some sleep as the new work week is about to begin). So far, the rusty knife has only opened one box ... with a gemstone in it :rolleyes:

I calculated it out and it would cost over 2000 dollars to get that many gems, which i based on percentages posted here on how often the gems are actually received when a box is opened. I got to the 19th gem very easily, without paying. Opening chance with middle option was excelent, I was very busy these days and I made attempts every now and than. I was hunting always only for one box, opened it, and than again go hunting for a box. Than I paid for the 20th box and the next ones (both options restarting the time and opening with a magic key, I spend around 220-240 gems), because I really wanted the building bonus, I wasnt interested in the stats or the other unit. I finished with 26 gems at the end and got the Avenger. :)

I doubt it's hacking. If it was hacking, then having your name on the leaderboard is like robbing a bank and leaving your ID there...Since they have the user name, Funzio would only have to look up purchase records to see if this person really did pay money for gems or not.
If someone is paying $2k or $3k, then good for Funzio. I'm a free player, so I'm glad there are pay players out there so that Funzio can make money and continue to offer the game for free to the rest of us.

I know people who spent $50k in games. And they are not crazy, they just have money and spend it on what they love, what they do and where they leave. 2-5k is not a lot.

I finished with 27 gems and got the holy avenger!

Really wanted it for 10% quicker upgrade time since I already had the 2 upgrades at once with the Gardian Elemental so really it's almost like a 20% quicker upgrade bonus

10 gems for me this time. Combination of short event and no time to play cut my chances down. I got the 10th with about 8 hours to go. No OT this time.

Muddy, your math is flawed. It doesn't consider flaming catapults die. So in the long run, you will still be spending gold buying more catapults while indestructible units live on and with better stats.

Why do a lot of people whine over gold? It isn't like you can feel it, smell it, hold it. It's on a server far, far away. Plus you can go raid, pvp, or collect a few hours/days longer if you need some gold.

Yes. CCM edited the very fist post of this thread to add the names of the top 250. You'll have to count to figure out the top 250 versus the top 50 though.

I am confused though. I thought someone here on the board said he got the Holy Avenger with 25 gems. I had 26 but am not on the list.

You'd have to PM CCM about that. If the bottom line was 25 (all ties go to the higher level person), then with 26 you should have it. Sometimes it takes hours to a couple of days for it to load up on your phone. You can check that by shutting off your phone (or completely closing your ap, ensuring it is not running in the back ground) and then opening it again. It should have a "Congratulations! You placed...." and the unit.

I ended up with 7 gems all using the gold option. I had a maybe 20% open rate on boxes, and maybe a 20% rate for gems on those opened boxes (the others being decent gold and lame, 25 honor points).

Yeah, no more gold options on these events, couldve boosted my buildings or bought A LOT of higher end units as opposed to getting a ridiculous amount "sorry" messages.

They really need to fix the medium open chance to actually be a medium chance to open, 50%.

On a lighter note, since we have a low chance of opening the box with a rusty knife and most of us are armed to the teeth, could we just use a battle axe and split the damn box open? :p

I got to the 19th gem very easily, without paying. Opening chance with middle option was excelent, I was very busy these days and I made attempts every now and than. I was hunting always only for one box, opened it, and than again go hunting for a box. Than I paid for the 20th box and the next ones (both options restarting the time and opening with a magic key, I spend around 220-240 gems), because I really wanted the building bonus, I wasnt interested in the stats or the other unit. I finished with 26 gems at the end and got the Avenger. :)

I am very satisfied with this event :)

With that kind of luck, you should stop wasting your time here and go find a real casino! [Just joking ... don't lose your shirt] ;)

Haha I do this from time to time just for the fun of it, sometimes fortune is smiling on me.
The event with the dragon eggs was a disaster for me, I got 10 eggs at the end and I was logging every hour for 15-16 times a day getting gold and hp. So it varries ;)
