Bonus Skill Points?

About 2-3 weeks ago my attack skill level jumped 100 points. I don't know if it was because of black widow shotgun that showed up in my loot, or because of all the fight challenges/goals I have done. If it was the gun, have they ever had an item like that for defense skill?, or if reward is there a defense equivalent?
