What is "loot" for?

Doesn't seem that I can do Anything with the things I have under my loot section.
What is the purpose of having them show? Am I missing something?

The FAQ doesn't say anything.

Most of it is quest related items.
The loot inventory page is where for you to see how many items you have collected for quest.
(You can start collecting items for some quests even before you start the event)
