Units VS Army/Hero equipment

Possibly a very novice question but here it is anyway

When are units used and when is army/hero equipment used?

I'm at level 9 with 4k att / 5k def and any units I buy dont add anything to my stats. I upgrade some units buildings in the hope those higher level units will improve them but I just upgraded magic units to level 4 and those units don't add anything. There are other units that DO at higher upgrade levels though.

My hero and army equipment all still add stats but they're pretty pricey. My problem is, being a novice, I don't know when the hero and army equipments is actually used. I.e do they only get used doing the story? Or do they also come in use for pvp or robbing? FYI I only attack players, I don't bother with the story or robbing.

Your Hero can only use Hero equipment.
Your Hero are used for PvE

Your Army can use both Army equipment and Hero equipment.
Your Army is the units used for PvP

In other words we have a Hero that is to stupid to use 2/3 of the equipment that the normal army guy can use.

Bonus info: The equipment you see in the Army store are infect the equipment used by the 2 other Hero classes.
(Your Army store will contains Warrior and Rogue equipment if you are Mage)

So although the Hero equip adds to my stats, it's completely useless against other players? Which means I personally would be better off not even investing in it?

Not much of a hero if he only has the balls to take on miniature goblins etc!

Your Army can also use your Hero equipment.
So your Hero equipment are used ind PvP.

It is Army equipment that is limit to PvP only.
