Gem units question

Is there any advantage to a single "expensive" unit, like the Giant Warrior at 500 gems (A=154: D=143) vs 10 Raiders at 45 gems each for 450 total gems and a combined (A=33: D=21) x 10 ? What am I missing? Thanks.

The advantage is that the more expensive units (say 140+ gems usually) is that they are more powerful then any units you can buy with gold. Those cheaper units, like the raiders, are weaker than units that you can buy with gold. The only advantage those cheaper units have over normal units is that they are indestructible.
