What are "grunts"?

My first post here, so please go easy on me;)

I know what grunts are in the general sense, but what do they mean in the listing of "my allies"? At level 79, I guess I really should know this already, but, sadly, I do not.

Grunts are allies which you get from finishing maps to level 3 and events.
You can't delete grunts unless u ask support so there pretty useless.

Useless is right. I was up to 40 grunts when I finally sent in a ticket to Funzio. They removed them right away. They also removed what they referred to as phantom allies. This was some bug that gave me allies that were not real players !?! My ally list went form 1700 down to 800 overnight, which was good for me. I am trying to get my allies down to the 500s.
