Ally attk/def score - battles

How exactly does battling work,when attacking someone or getting attacked. I heard for every ally,I can bring 4 of my units with me into battle. Or is it alll my untis plus 4 additional units from there's? . I ask this because for example. I just got attacked by someone with 15000attk 14000 def. He owned over 11,000 units and has 248 allies. So what would be the point of owing soo many units with 248 allies and you really can only bring about 1000 into battle??? Anyone get what I saying

4 units of YOURS only. You are allowed to use 5 allies per level up to 500 allies thus a 2000 unit max battle group of your best units that can be used if you at L100.

You can't sell units at this time so with buying and loot it is easy to amass tons of units.

I'm only a level 59 . But the guy had bought his 11,000 units. So why would it benefit him to buy that many if he can only bring not even a 1/4 of them into battle
