View Full Version : Buying crates gives you 2.5x more value on your gold
Dr. Dengus

Was bored and decided to create a spreadsheet about gold units. Figured out the average gold cost per attack and defense stat for crate units and non-crate units. Then compared the average costs of the two. On average you should be getting over double your gold's worth opening crates, as opposed to just buying the non-crate units. This was already common knowledge, but just wanted to see the numbers.
On average, you should be receiving a unit from the crates with an attack of 49.05 and defense of 50.42 (using the following equations with current WWII crates):
Attack:
[ ( 0.65 * ( (14+25+29) / 3) )+( 0.25 * ( (72+85+62)/3) ) )+(0.1 * ( (126+145+211)/3) ) ] = 49.05
Defense:
[ ( 0.65 * ( (26+38+21)/3) )+( 0.25 * ( (87+74+59)/3) ) )+(0.1 * ( (195+119+96)/3) ) ] = 50.4167
This averages out to 0.985 gold spent per attack stat and 0.9586 spent per defense stat (Assuming you buy a 3 pack which is 48.33 gold per crate). When this is compared to non-crate units (2.47 gold spent per attack and 2.61 per defense) you are getting just over 2.5 times the value.
Attack: (2.47/.985) = 2.51
Defense: (2.61/.9586) = 2.72
Like I said, was just bored haha.

Really nice math there Dr.
Ya, crates on the whole are excellent, and the numbers of rare drops is consistant with the perchentages .ie 9%
I've gotten 4 rares out of 20 crates over the last while, that's not bad at all!

Nice maths Dr.Dengus, and thanks for confirming the value of crates over buying individual items.

You could of just threw numbers and symbols together and I would of believed you. Last time I bought 3 pack crates. I bought 5 3 packs and only got 1 rare...soo... Wp Bought 10 3 packs and only got 1 rare

Good work... I certainly appreciate that bit further support for my Gold Spending and surviving the big boy posts... I copped flak (Thank god I'm not a Russian) for my recommendation on buying bulk triple crates! So glad to see your boredom and mine resulted in this... :)
I have found so far touch wood, buying 1500 gold and dumping it into 8x3 crates has resulted in Rare drops around 20-25%, at common's expense. Have two of the big ones too which would cost 750-950 each as individual items and instead I have a back bone of over a hundred (event and crate alike) units that can't die.
On top of that I started out (before using crates) only buying individual gold units iff (maths terms not miss spelling) either (A+D)/G = 1.2+ or A/G or D/G = 0.7+ otherwise I felt it was a watse. Buying crates has yielded (in bulk) ratios 1.8+ and above accross the batch.
Heres my list to date of Crate Units.

Wow this was my first ever post haha. Thanks for the feedback guys, glad someone else appreciated the effort. This was back when three packs were 150g and rares had a 10% drop rate. I did the same math (estimated value) for the 175g three packs somewhere. And with the rare chance being increased up to 15%, the 175g three packs are still worth their weight in gold :)
Oh and I haven't kept that spreadsheet up to date with LE's or anything. I just used it to compare the crate units with the other gold units available at that time. I feel honored to have a thread of mine revived though haha.

Must have been something in the air (certainly here in Beijing right now anyway....yuck) cause I did pretty much the same as you Dr Dengus.
Started out as a plan to work out the most cost economical cash and Valor units to get taking into consideration my current lowest level attack and defense unit. After that decided to do the Gold units as well. Did it a little differently to you by again taking my current lowest attack and defence unit strength into consideration but crate items filled the top seven slots on overall value.

Oops, I just found out a rather expensive lesson.....
Had a colleague drop in with her seven year old twins to say hi. Put the iPad down but obviously didn't log out of the game...
Kids found the iPad.......with MW open and also found the crates section so they must have decided to play a game and see who got the best "gift"...Mum spotted them fairly quickly and told them to put it down, obviously wasn't quick enough cause I just found out I am now the proud owner of an extra 3 Assault Jumpers, 3 Jungle Hunters, 5 Mortar Jeep ......and thankfully one Oceanic Destroyer....
Guess the final word on this is that understanding that the crates are the best value Gold units you can get is obviously........child's play....

You should ask whoever won the Oceanic Destroyer to open your crates more often haha.

hahahaha Tell them next time to buy 3-packs for better odds. I actually have my kids open event crates hoping to bust up "sorry" runs. Congrats on the elusive Oceanic Destroyer.

That's hilarious, Cope, because I do the exact same thing! I have my son (5) "trained" to "check my games" for me, so when he's playing on the iPad, he logs in to MW, CC, and KA every so often to "tap all the monies and lock 'em up!"
During events, I let him tap the open button (The MIDDLE one! ONLY THE MIDDLE ONE!!!) and he has gotten me the 9th item twice and the 10th once. He does love to "blow stuff up" though, so I sometimes open the app to find all my stamina and energy gone and have to try to decipher what missions he completed or which players he may have p!ssed off.
It's handy that he collects, but he doesn't understand about checking stats before attacking. What is wrong with kindergarten these days? How hard is it to calculate an opponents boost after country and building bonuses? Jeesh...

Ok. I gave in once again just in hopes of getting at least an uncommon. I bought a 3 pack. And received ...... 3 commons ( 2 jungle hunters, assault jumper ) . So of course I'm not going down like that and buy another 3 pack. Next ones are .... 2 rares and 1 common. ( steel jet, armored transporter ,and a mortar jeep ) . Ive never got the best rare but this is the best I've ever done. Last time I bought 5 3 packs, got 1 rare. This time, bought 2 3 packs, got 2 rare.

JP that is damn funny. My 3 yo is already learning to search for Pocoyo and Dora on YouTube, maybe I should get her opening crates! I turn the in app purchases off unless I actually am going to buy something, which is rare, so no worries there.
As to the topic, I love the deep analysis of this but it always seemed very obvious to me. For the cost of three commons you have the chance to win rares that are much more valuable. Maybe I'm just better at doing math in my head?! ;)
The only time crates wouldn't be the best bet is if you have truly unlimited funds and you are gunning to be top dog.

Haha, yeah it was definitely obvious crates were a better value. The OCD part of me just wanted to see PRECISELY how much of a better deal you were getting. Plus I was a statistics major in college so this was just like an easy little project on probability for me lol. I find it funny though how this thread gets revived and receives 20 times the attention than it did initially :)

So, I splurgerd yesterday and bought a 3-pack of crates. I was shocked to see I got 2 rares (both Armored Transporters) and 1 common (Assualt Jumper). I think I got my gold's worth...and then some!! :)
