Why am I losing fights?

Why am I losing fights to people who I out-point by one or two hundred? I know it's my attack vs their defense when I attack and vice versa when they hit me. Can anyone explain this and why if I have a 34 person mafia I only bring 33 items into a fight?

There's a random factor added to fights. You can lose even if you're stats are better.

There is randomness plus attack and defense points that factor in as well.

I got the +100 att item last event and it made a huge different(lvl 57) I now win almost always against those with 700 more def than my att.
