You have quite a few levels to go before they open up to you. You will be surprised how much you can accumulate with a few minutes here and there.
Personally would avoid the Pirate Tavern as the 8 hour collection cycle is a real pain for me. It may work well for you though.

Also in the app under gold, make sure you click on the button to earn free gold. You can make a couple of gold every other day this way and depending if they are running other promos ie watch a trailer

Not everyone has the button, some get it eventually, and some have it and one day notice it's gone. I used to have that button. Now I don't.
